2024 OBA Show & Sale
The OBA just held its 25th annual bison show & sale! Over the years our location, environment and industry has changed, but incredibly we have many of our original founding members still attending to this day. We saw a lot of growth between last year, which was our first sale in a few years and the first at the OKC Fairgrounds, and this year. We made a few changes to this sale: date, barn, auctioneer and the seminar and I want to touch lightly on each to explore how or if the specific change made an impact on our sale.
1) Date: We moved up our sale from the middle of December in 20223 to the end of October in 2024. We made this change based on majority voting from the membership. After doing so and exploring the outcomes and we now have 2 different dates that we can compare for future sales. Many discussions were had about the change in date and if it was ove4rall beneficial for not only our members but particularly the consigners and therefore the health and well-being of the animals. Many factors will be considered when planning and scheduling 2025’s sale.
2) Barn: We moved the animals from Barn 3 to Barn 7/8 which was across the alleyway from last year (and from the restaurant and sale room). This allowed for not only more pens but much larger pens and we have the potential to double the number of pens while utilizing the same space. For load-in/loud-out purposes we are looking at switching doors which will avoid the pitch of the sidewalk and avoid the traffic from other events and exhibits happening at the same time and using the same alleyway.
3) Auctioneer: Quality Auction Services served as our auctioneer company and simulcast platform this year. As the numbers in the summary show, we had many more eyes on our auction this year which is very promising. One way, you as members can help with marketing our sale is by providing your consignment details as early as possible as the auctioneer’s marketing is only as good as the details and information we can provide them.
4) Member Seminar & Meeting: This year scheduled a membership meeting and seminar with a speaker in hopes of providing more time amongst our members while focusing on our association and our industry. Membership participation is important as we do not get a lot of time for our group to get together in person. This year we voted in 5 board members: Cheri White Owl, Bob Woebbeking, Harleigh Moore, Bretta Matthews & Charles Addington.
As we start planning our next sale, we look forward to continuing to increase membership participation, larger consignment and higher buyer numbers and prices. We will keep all these factors in mind to yield the best outcome for our members as possible. As always, your OBA Officers are an open door and are always open to hearing your thoughts, opinions and needs both from us as an association and as stewards of our industry.
